I’m looking at one tomorrow, price is great and so is the mileage and the armoring. I prefer a wagon over the SUVs and the Subaru got me interested.
It’s a 2009 Outback 3.oR with the paddle shifters.
To those looking to train their Portuguese or look at the actual pictures of the car, here is the add:

Click and Clack have noted the piston-slap problem in these engines. Study piston slap, and make sure you get a car that doesn’t make those sounds. Otherwise, you’ll need (I think) an engine.

The Flaw is that it’s not a Legacy 3.0R

The 3.0 is the better engine in the older gen Subarus. As long as it was well maintained, it should make for a good car!

Horrible gas mileage like less than 20 mpg city and maybe 25 mpg highway if you are lucky and have a tail wind. Otherwise I’ve heard these are very desirable cars.

I want a wagon for the practicality.

At 31k miles I hope this isn’t a problem but it should make itself apparent quite easily.

Fuck practicality sedans are kool.

The gas mileage I’m ok with.
In the words of Zoidberg “smiles per gallon>miles per gallon”

At 31k miles I hope there isn’t much to go wrong. The ad mentions new tires, battery, maintenance records and papers.

OR you could get an Outback 3.0R Sedan.

Sounds pretty good then! It’s hands down my favorite gen Outback! Too bad they aren’t roomier inside, or I’d be driving an 08-09 instead of my 15.

I know a guy at work who got one so he could set up mountain bike race courses. He got a good skid plate for it to protect the bottom, but I don’t think he’s done anything else to it. He thrashes his pretty good, but it cleans up well.

My mom owned a 2009. She came to visit and we took both our Subies for oil changes. She knew the tires were worn and needed to be replaced, but wanted to get it back home before footing the bill. Unfortunately, the Subaru dealership found a leak in the transmission while changing the oil, either at one of the front drive shafts or the prop shaft. I didn’t look, so I’m not sure which. Either way, they quoted over $1,200 to repair.
She spotted a leftover 2014 Outback in the lot and decided that $1,200 for the repair and $1,000 for tires would be better spent on a down payment. She drove a new car home.
Look underneath for leaks. They can be expensive.

I remember the 3.0 (the 3.6 too) require premium fuel. They are good engines though, part of the valvetrain is licensed from Porsche.

I really like the 3.6 in my Tribeca, quite powerful for an older 6 cylinder.
I could use a wagon again, and the Outback seems like a good idea.

wagon seems like a good choice, the 3.0 (if i remember) feels much sportier at the upper reaches of the tach, but a lot softer down low compared to the EZ36 (which uses a Subaru VVT, but not Variable lift like the EZ30)

Wait these take premium? That explains A LOT about my mom’s car.
